Hypnotherapy — Questions and Answers

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural, normal state of mind that allows access to your subconscious mind. Used professionally, Hypnosis can reduce stress, control pain, conquer fears, and alter habits. If you want it to happen. Hypnosis is a procedure that can be used to effect changes in sensations, perceptions, thoughts, feelings or behaviours.

Acceptance of Hypnosis

In 1958 the American Medical Association (AMA) accepted Hypnosis as a viable form of treatment. Hypnosis is a natural state we often slip into in our daily lives.

Hypnosis is…

…a natural, normal state of mind we often slip into in our daily lives.
…a state of heightened susceptibility to suggestion.
…a natural state of deep physical and mental relaxation, and intensified concentration. This state of physical and mental relaxation and intensified concentration allows the subconscious mind to be more open to suggestions and to focus on the desired goals. The suggestions are designed to cater to the various ways in which your subconscious mind processes information to better assist you in achieving your desired outcome.

Hypnosis is not…

… sleep, NOT a state of unconsciousness, NOT a loss of control to someone else. You are always in control. You can hear and be aware of everything that is going on around you. You can think, itch, scratch, talk and make decisions. While under hypnosis you will not say or do anything that you wouldn't normally do or say nor give any secrets away. There is no way you will violate your own private sense of morality or propriety.

How does Hypnosis work?

Your conscious mind is the critical filter which filters or edits processed information traveling from the conscious mind to the subconscious mind. Under Hypnosis you allow the conscious mind to be bypassed.

Why use hypnosis?

Let us begin by looking at what people want. Everyone would like to enjoy good health. Everyone wants to be happy. Everyone wants to experience the satisfaction of a successful life. Anyone who has a sincere desire for better health, improved relationships, more success and, in general, a happier life can do so.

Using hypnosis as a tool we can achieve inner strength, survive adversities and improve ourselves in ways that will assist us in leading fuller, richer lives. There is always much that we can do to correct and improve our situation in life. Hypnosis is a very effective tool to create change, to create the reality you desire. Hypnosis can bring great benefits to your life - more energy, better health, success and happiness.

Hypnosis uses the vast potential of your mind to reshape your reality. You can transform nervousness into helpful, productive energy. You can eliminate unwanted habits and control your weight. Fears can be reduced or eliminated and a positive self-image cultivated. You can remember where you misplaced an object or ease yourself to sleep more easily at night. You can prepare for surgery or the birth of a child. You can develop your memory and creativity. You can improve your sales. You can improve your golf game, your tennis or any other sport you enjoy. You can attract more love, more success and find more fulfillment in life. There is almost no limit to what you can do.

What does Hypnosis feel like?

You feel relaxed. At ease. You can hear everything, think, itch, scratch, talk and make decisions. You can also choose to come out of trance at any time. You are always in control. You will not do or say anything that you would not normally do or say. There is no way you will violate your own private sense of morality or propriety or give any secrets away.

Can I get "stuck" in Hypnosis

No. There is no possible way for this to happen. If for some reason the Hypnotist leaves the room or is interrupted, you will gently come out of trance, just as you do each morning coming out of sleep.

Will I always know where I am?

Yes. You will hear everything around you and be aware of what is going on at all times. In fact your senses may become heightened.

Hypnotic Suggestions

During the hypnotic state, you will receive the suggestions agreed to between your hypnotist and yourself. There will be some additional suggestions that may seem totally irrelevant. These different suggestions are designed to cater to the various ways in which your subconscious mind processes information. Suggestions given to your subconscious mind bypass the critical mind, which you use day-to-day,and go straight to the part of the mind that controls habits.

What happens in a session?

The first session is usually 1 1/2 hours subsequent sessions are about 1 hour. Your goals are discussed with the hypnotist and the induction script is prepared. You are gently hypnotized into a trance state. Suggestions are given to your subconscious mind to make the positive changes you desire. Under hypnosis you are also taught a simple self hypnosis technique so that your treatment can continue at home. You emerge from the hypnotic state feeling relaxed and energized.
